Sounds Like Paradise

This is probably my last mix of the year, and I think it's a pretty good one. I like that it's not a simple recitation of pop songs you could hear by switching on any Top 40 radio station. While I do enjoy mixing with remixed pop hits, I think it was time for a break. If you don't follow dance music, most of these songs (save two or three) will be new to you. And more new music is always a good thing.

Favorites of mine include Fedde Le Grand's fantastic Coldplay remix, Basto's progressive anthem (that I somehow let slip past me until now), and Tim Mason's intense Lucid remix. I think Kaskade did a great job on both tracks here, as well. But don't take my word for it; download & listen away!

Frighteningly Good Beats

The leaves have fallen, the weather has cooled, and ghosts and ghouls are flooding the streets. Halloween has arrived, and what better time is there to drop some serious beats?

This mix essentially belongs to two artists - Avicii & the Wideboys - both of whom have three great tracks on this one. Avicii's productions continue to amaze with what is simultaneously a unique & an immediately recognizable sound. He's so good lately, in fact, that mainstream pop artists seem to find it appropriate to shamelessly rip off his music (*ahem* Leona Lewis & Flo Rida).

The Wideboys are a British duo I've enjoyed for years now, but I'm impressed by how much they've evolved recently. Each of their three songs in this mix sounds completely different, incorporating elements of house, pop, lounge, and even dubstep.

There are other highlights here too, of course, including another great mix from eSQUIRE vs OFFBeat, a couple of remixes from DJ's From Mars, and a driving house track from Umek that reminds me of the good times at the Cardinal with Nick Nice. Good stuff.

Download this mix, drop it in the middle of your Halloween party, and I guarantee your peeps will be dancing...unless you're all zombies, that is.

My latest mix is about 50% pop and 50% electro & progressive. I generally like to mix with a variety of different house music styles, and this one came out pretty even-handed. In particular, I'm really loving what both eSQUIRE and Avicii have been putting out lately, but the Save the Robot track and Dave Aude's Beyonce remix are pretty nice as well.

I'm already working on something new, so hopefully there won't be another three-month gap between mixes. We'll see. :)

Summer Ender

I put this mix together in a couple of hours before a day on the boat with some friends. It was a quick production, so there are no tracks, no tracklist, and hardly any post-mix edits. I can tell you, though, that it includes tracks from David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Klaas, Afrojack, Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO, Usher, Alexandra Stan, and more. I hope you enjoy the little bonus mix! We'll return to regular programming with a more typical mix next week. :)

Gayer Than Most...

Pride month is here, which means lots of celebrating, lots of and definitely lots of dancing. This is the third Pride mix I've put together in the past few years, and it's interesting to me that they've all got a dinstinctly different feel to them. The first Pride mix (2009) was just a lot of fun, with a lot of cheesy throwbacks and big gay anthems. Last year was definitely a bit more progressive, with lots of big piano tunes and a touch of electro. This year is fairly heavy on the pop side of things. I'll be honest and admit I had a hard time finding a group of songs that really aligned with the Pride theme, and ended up reverting to some of the larger pop hits from earlier this year (Firework, Till the World Ends, etc). In the end, though, I think that resulted in a solidly danceable mix with a good combination of new tracks and more recognizable tunes that people will want to dance to.

A big part of Pride is bridging our differences and bringing people together. What better way to do that than through music everyone can appreciate?

Get it Started

This is a nice collection of pop, house, and electro dance tunes to get your summer started off right. There are a lot of big tracks here; in particular, I really enjoy Kaskade's take on Robyn's newest single, and Example's "Changed the Way You Kiss Me." The two Adele tracks are pretty sick too, especially DJ's From Mars' mash the classic Robyn S anthem.

My annual Pride mix should be posted within the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out. Until then, I hope you enjoy this one!

Double Feature - Part II

Whereas the mix I posted yesterday sits comfortably in the dancepop side of things, this one is much closer to a peakhour mix. It's high energy through and through, with lots of electro, a touch of progressive, and a few strains of electropop scattered throughout. I'm quite pleased with the entire thing, though I do have to admit that the last four songs are easily my favorites - easily some of the finest electro house music I've heard in awhile. Perhaps this will be a good year music-wise after all.
