Strange World

Just in time for Halloween, a brand new, 101-minute commercial, progressive, and electro house set with many of the best tracks of the year.  Though light on the pop end of the spectrum, I think you'll find plenty here to get your toes tapping and you ears pulsing.  Throw this mix on for your Halloween party this weekend, and I can almost guarantee your guests will never want to leave.  Unless they're lame, that is.

Rich bought a new jeep a few months back, and since it came with a free year of XM radio, I've been listening to BPM quite recently.  This has no doubt influenced my musical tastes lately, as evidenced by the sheer number of commercial & progressive producers in this tracklist.  I've never been big into the driving, overly-repetetive tribal house music that often infiltrates the largest of late night gay spaces, nor have I ever been all about the diva-esque gay anthems and bubblegum "gay pop" music that seems to overload most Pride festivals (ie Cascada, Kristine W, etc).  But there has been a pretty distinct shift in my mixes from electro house and mainstream pop remixes to commercial, progressive & European house music.  Whether this will stick or not remains to be seen, I suppose. Rest assured, I do still enjoy a well-crafted electro banger now and again!

Favorite tracks here include SHM's (probably) final tune "Don't You Worry Child," Stereo Palma's "Our Love", and Chuckie's take on Neon Hitch.  I also like Klaas' work on Pulsar, Andy Harding's latest remix, and what Dzeko & Torres did with Animal Kingdom's indie rock track.  I hope you find some new favorites also.

Another Summer Ender...

Summer is just about over, and somehow I managed to only post one single mix in three months.  The sad part is that I have so many great, new tracks that I'd like to use.  My hope is that the next month will come sooner than later...but no promises. :)

Hopefully this one was worth the wait.  It's pretty heavy on the progressive & commercial house end of the spectrum, but there are a few pop songs sprinkled throughout and a couple of electro tracks toward the end.  All of these songs are pretty high quality, especially Christangelo's Chuckie & Promise Land bootleg remix, Spencer & Hill's "Let Out Da Freak", Michael Woods' remix of Calvin Harris's latest, and Micha Moor's take on the well-known "Take Me To the Clouds Above".  By all means, feel free to leave a comment and let me know which songs you enjoyed most.

Be Proud.

Another year has passed, and every gay man's favorite holiday has arrived.  It's really quite amazing to think of how many significant advances were made in the past 12 months.  Gay men and women have begun marrying in New York.  Same-sex marriage became legal in Maryland and Washington, and stayed legal in New Hampshire.  Numerous anti-gay laws - and some same-sex marriage bans - were overturned.  And of course, Barack Obama became the first sitting US President to offer his support of gay marriage.

It's easy to get caught up in the celebration of what we have achieved.  But I believe it's always important to recognize that regardless of how far we've come, we still have a long ways to go.  We have a lot of very brave men and women to thank for standing up for what they believed in and fighting to get us to where we are today.  The road to equality is long, and we are certainly not at its end.  And we would be remiss to celebrate this weekend without taking a moment to thank those who came before us who have fought so hard to make such great strides.

No doubt your ears will be jammed with the sounds of Pride all weekend long.  This is my contribution - nearly two hours of pop, house, electro, and progressive tunes guaranteed to get you dancing.  Most of this is stuff is brand spankin' new, but there are few throwbacks and reworks sprinkled throughout.  Highlights are too numerous to list, but I'd be surprised if you didn't find at least a few new favorites. 

Celebrate hard this weekend.  Continue to stand and fight.  Be proud.  Crank up the music, and never stop dancing.  Happy Pride!

Surrender to the Sound...

Okay, so I'm still behind.  It took me a bit longer to finish this one, which I admit was mostly a lack of motivation.  I'm not sure it's necessary to continue worrying about an 80-minute track limit.  Isn't everyone just listening to these on their iPod or phone now anyway?  (Please let me know your thoughts either way!).

Regardless of the delay, I think this came together nicely.  I think the stuff I'm putting together now is a significant improvement over what I was doing even a year or two ago.  I've gone back and listened to some of my older stuff lately, and there's a lot of imperfect stuff I'd never let slide past me now.  Maybe I've gotten better.  Or maybe I'm just more of a perfectionist now.  Who can really say?


This mix is a little less hardcore than the last, though it does hit some heavy electro notes by the end.  But it takes a bit longer to get there, and there's a nice, long lead-in of some more chill songs that I really enjoy.  There's a lot to like here, I think, but my favorites are probably the Starkillers/Nadia Ali track, the Bodybangers remix, Chris Lake's driving house tune "Sundown," and Dirty South's "Alive."  It's a bit older now, but there are about a dozen amazing remixes of that tune, by the way, and you should consider checking the others out.

It's Midnight Somewhere...

Wow, it's been a whopping four months since I posted my last monthly mix (perhaps it's time to stop referring to them as "montly mixes"). As such, I've got a fairly large backlog of music that I've been meaning to work into some new mixes. I've selected probably my 20 favorites for this mix. Some of them are, of course, a few months old but these were just too good to pass on.

This mix is a return to my typical format (pop-maintream-electro), with perhaps a bit more progressive than usual. That's really more of a trend than an exception; progressive music is becoming the mainstream dance sound, with electro feeling a bit "been there, done that" lately. Trends in music change and evolve, of course, but I largely blame pop music artists for ruining the electro sound. I enjoy the occasional Black Eyed Peas or Ncki Minaj song, but it's hard to appreciate electro house when it's been co-opted by the likes of Flo Rida, Pitbull, and Britney Spears. Feel free to disagree. :)

 In any case, I hope you enjoy this mix. Favorite tracks? Pretty much everything here, though R3hab's Lady Gaga remix, the Avicii and Spencer & Hill tracks, Basto's take on The Wanted, and Chuckie's "Down for Whatever" remix are pretty sick. Keep your eyes on the blog; another new mix will be posted very shortly. I promise.

Oh, Mexico...

I am currently putting the finishing touches on two different mixes, but I'm off to Mexico tomorrow, and there won't be time to finish. To help tide everyone over, I've decided to post a little bonus mix I made a few months ago, after our last trip to Playa del Carmen. Rich asked me to put together a set containing many of the songs we heard during our trip. That idea gradually transformed into this - a mix mostly made up of popular, mainstream dance tracks, with a bit of Mexican and Spanish-language flair.

This mix was almost titled "Memories of Mandala." Mandala is far and away our favorite club in Playa, and so this mix ended up being pretty heavily influenced by the music we heard there. The club is open to the street with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, and we have some truly amazing memories of dancing to Levels and Take Over Control in the steamy night air while rain poured down outside.

There's no tracks for this one, since it was literally thrown together in the course of an evening or two. If you're not big into the mainstream/pop stuff, this mix probably isn't for you. But I hope it's at least a little something to entertain until the next two are ready.

BTW, the last track is very obviously not characteristic for me. Rich asked that I include it, and I reluctantly obliged. I do not necessarily agree with its inclusion. :)
