Summer Starter 2K13

Kick start your Memorial Day Weekend with a delightful 87-minute set from yours truly.  As usual, this one is long overdue, so I've lost the element of surprise a bit with some tracks that can hardly be considered "new" at this point.  (This is especially notable with the first two tracks, I'm sure).  However, I felt the remixes of these tracks were good enough to warrant inclusion here.

Electro House seems to be making a bit of a resurgence after nearly dying out (or at least almost reaching the point of intolerability) a few months back.  I'm happy to hear some new electro songs that are both fresh and unique, and you'll no doubt find this mix is a bit more balanced progressive/electro than some of my more recent postings.  Never fear, though - there's plenty here for all of the prog-heads out there.

Whatever your plans this weekend, I hope you get a chance to crank this at least once, whether it's at a barbeque, the pool, or on a long jog around the 'hood.  Obviously, I also hope that you get to listen to it outside.  Winter has finally released its persistent grasp, and things are finally heating up.  Thank God.

Something old, something new...

Well, I suppose it wouldn't be February March without another Flashbacks mix. This is the seventh Flashbacks mix I've put together, and it's evident that dance music styles are changing. Whereas the first several Flashbacks sets consisted mainly of electro house reworks, this one is almost entirely made up of progressive anthems (and a little bit of house, too). Indeed, many of the original tunes I've used here have been used in previous mixes when electro house was big and producers were cranking out 80's and 90's reworks with electro basslines. Perhaps it's getting repetitive now to keep reinterpreting same 80's and 90's songs over and over again, but I still appreciate the transformation of old pop songs into dancefloor-friendly anthems. And everyone seems to appreciate the familiarity when a DJ throws a rework or two into the middle of his or her set.

Voice of Reason

It's been two months since I've posted some new music, and despite a pretty kick-ass Top 30 last month, this is probably a bit overdue.  I really like this one - fairly equal parts pop and commercial progressive/electro house blend seamlessly into 97+ minutes of joyful noise.  Notable standouts are Thomas Gold's remix of the new One Republic track, Avicii & Nicky Romero's club-friendly "I Could Be the One", Vicetone's nice remix of FLG's "Sparks", and Dzeko & Torres' smashing take on Kryder & Bo Bruce's "Damaged" remake.  I broke my own rule of not using a remix of a track I've previously used (twice actually!), but both of them were good enough to warrant inclusion here.

I've got nothing else to say, so I'll let you download and judge it yourself.  But I do hope you enjoy.

Pair of Hands

After last week's pop-heavy mix, I felt it was time for one more "traditional" mix before end of the year.  This one starts out particularly melodic, with some really nice progressive piano anthems and gradually builds to intense electro bangers, hitting some of the year's best tunes along the way.  I don't think there's a lame track here; certainly there are favorites, but I won't bother listing them here (it should become quite obvious when I post my annual Top 30 mix at the end of the month anyway).

Explosion

This mix was created in tandem with another that will (most likely) be posted later this week. It's been quite awhile since I've put together a mainstream, pop-centric set, so this is probably a bit overdue. If you hate when DJ's play nothing but top-40 tunes, then you'll probably want to pass on this one. But if you're craving some nice remixes of songs you mostly already know, I think you'll definitely enjoy this one. All-in-all, this is a pretty dancefloor-friendly mix...I tried not to get too crazy (though I think you'll find that by the end, I just couldn't help myself). :)

Make sure to check back later this week for a pretty killer commercial/progressive/electro set that should serve as a pretty nice counter-balance to this one.

Strange World

Just in time for Halloween, a brand new, 101-minute commercial, progressive, and electro house set with many of the best tracks of the year.  Though light on the pop end of the spectrum, I think you'll find plenty here to get your toes tapping and you ears pulsing.  Throw this mix on for your Halloween party this weekend, and I can almost guarantee your guests will never want to leave.  Unless they're lame, that is.

Rich bought a new jeep a few months back, and since it came with a free year of XM radio, I've been listening to BPM quite recently.  This has no doubt influenced my musical tastes lately, as evidenced by the sheer number of commercial & progressive producers in this tracklist.  I've never been big into the driving, overly-repetetive tribal house music that often infiltrates the largest of late night gay spaces, nor have I ever been all about the diva-esque gay anthems and bubblegum "gay pop" music that seems to overload most Pride festivals (ie Cascada, Kristine W, etc).  But there has been a pretty distinct shift in my mixes from electro house and mainstream pop remixes to commercial, progressive & European house music.  Whether this will stick or not remains to be seen, I suppose. Rest assured, I do still enjoy a well-crafted electro banger now and again!

Favorite tracks here include SHM's (probably) final tune "Don't You Worry Child," Stereo Palma's "Our Love", and Chuckie's take on Neon Hitch.  I also like Klaas' work on Pulsar, Andy Harding's latest remix, and what Dzeko & Torres did with Animal Kingdom's indie rock track.  I hope you find some new favorites also.
