Here we go again... (Pride 2019)

Every year before beginning to assemble my Pride mix, I panic slightly that I won't have enough tracks to put to together a proper mix.  I don't follow dance music like I used to, so I essentially have to start from scratch to find music.  And this year, like every year, my panic was unwarranted because as usual I've gathered more music than I could ever use.  So this is how I've ended up with the longest Pride mix I've ever assembled.  I sincerely hope everyone who listens can at least stick with it through the end at least once, as I think it only gets better as it progresses.

I always try to keep to new music only (roughly from the past year), but I did have to throw in the amazing Dash Berlin remix of the Chainsmokers' "New York City."  Though it's a couple of years old now, it somehow eluded me until now.  And it's fantastic.  There's plenty of great stuff here, but the other major standout to me is the beautifully haunting remix Illenium did of Halsey's "Without Me."  The last 30 seconds of the track give me goosebumps every time.

The heartbeat you hear at the beginning is a connection to the one you'll hear near the end, at the close of a beautiful tribute to a young talent lost way too soon.  Its inclusion in this mix seemed all-too-fitting given the struggle many in our community endure.  You are loved and never forgotten, indeed.

Fifty years ago, a group of courageous men, women, and trans people fought back against a discriminatory police raid of an LGBT bar, effectively changing the course of the gay rights movement in the United States.  It's taken 50 years, but things have certainly changed for the better.  And though we should take time to celebrate that, we also need to recognize we've a long way to go.  Social justice movements certainly seem to be cyclical, with periods of sudden, significant advancements interrupted by setbacks and regressions.  An unstable, wannabe dictator-in-chief certainly doesn't help, not to mention the disturbing number of lawmakers whose views have evolved little in the past 100 years.  It's as important as ever that the fight continue.  Yes, here we go again.

It's time for Pride (again!)

The older I get, the faster time seems to fly by.  It seems like just yesterday I was wrapping up my 2017 Pride mix, and now Pride is already here again!

Made to accompany one of the craziest weekends of the year, this mix blends some of my favorite pop and dance tracks from the past year.  Since I'm only putting together one mix a year now, there are a few older tracks here from late last summer.  I generally try to stay timely, but I thought they were good enough to be included.

Although not specifically related to Pride, I've ended the mix with two of Avicii's biggest and most recognizable songs as a sort of tribute to a brilliant artist we lost way too soon.  His death a few months ago hit me rather hard, as he was incredibly talented and undoubtedly one of my favorites.  Avicii music frequently contained themes of love and brotherhood and acceptance, which aligns rather nicely with the meaning of Pride.

Remember what Pride is about this weekend when you're out celebrating, and take time to appreciate the little moments.  Life slips away far too quickly.  Here's to a memorable 2018 Pride!

As I'm sure you've noticed, I'm basically down to posting one mix a year now.  But that's okay, because Pride is just about my favorite time of the year, and the annual Pride mix was always one of my favorites anyway.  This one's a bit less heavy than in previous years, which is perhaps a reflection of how dance music has evolved.  But as ususal, there's a bit of everything here, from pop remixes to mainstream EDM, with a few flashbacks thrown in too.  Here's to a very happy & very memorable Pride 2017.

Pride 2015

Once again, it's been far too long since my last post.  I haven't necessarily given up on mixing, but I'm finding it more difficult (and myself less interested) in finding the time to put something together.  That said, I hadn't even planned on mixing a Pride set this year.  But as pride weekend approached, I suddenly felt inspired to quickly throw something together.  Unfortunately, time wasn't quite on my side, and my perfectionist nature prevented me from finishing this before the weekend.  Now I've spent three weeks occasionally tweaking and fixing it to the point where I'm satisfied.  Better late than never, I hope.

There's not much I need to say about this one...it's pretty straightforward commercial house music you've probably heard before on BPM, in a club, or even your local pop radio station.  But I think it's a fun (and celebratory) mix that's a bit harder-hitting dance club friendly than my previous Pride mixes.  Chalk that up to the ever blurring line between dance and pop music.

The cheering you hear in the beginning was recorded outside of the Supreme Court Building moments after the gay marriage decision was released.  I needed a bit of an intro, and a way to tie this in to Pride, and thought that was an obvious way to do it.  Lots to celebrate this year, for sure.

Summer Pool Party (Redux)

Nearly three years ago, I posted a pretty kick-ass pool party mix that I basically threw together in an hour.  That mix has since become a favorite to play whenever we're at the beach, at the pool, or hanging out with people who enjoy the more mainstream/pop side of EDM.  Although I think that mix holds up well, three years have passed, so many fitting new songs have emerged, and (let's face it) several of the tracks in the original pool mix were just too damn long.  So this year, rather than trying to one-up that mix, I've done one better - a completely modified, remastered, and re-mixed version of the original Summer Pool Party mix.  I've cut just one song from the original, but added 19 new ones, cut down the older tracks, and managed to fit it all in less than two hours!  If you like pop remixes or mainstream EDM, you will love this.

Summer is quickly fading; by my count, you've got about two weeks left to enjoy.  So crank this up when you hit up the beach, pool, or lake this weekeend and enjoy the last few moments of Summer, 2014.  This may seem a bit late to release this, but my hope is this will be as popular and as long-lasting as the original Summer Pool Party.  Download away!

Pride 2K14

My second Pride weekend in a row kicks off today, and I'm happy to present the perfect soundtrack for your own Pride weekend.

Pop, progressive, and electro dance tunes blend together like the club kids, gay families, drag queens, and allies who will be venturing out this weekend in the colorful tapestry that is Pride.  Take at least a moment to reflect on where we were ten years ago, and the amazing progress that has been made.  Marvel at the diversy of people who will come together this weekend to celebrate and stand together as one.  Then turn down the lights, turn up the music, and dance like there's no tomorrow.  Happy Pride!
