RISE (Pride 2026)

It was quite a race to get this thing finished in time for Pride weekend this year. After the previously-mentioned laptop incident, I really had no way to mix any music until about two weeks ago, which is significantly less time than I usually allow myself to put together a Pride mix. And despite telling myself I was just going to keep it short(er) to make it easier on myself, this year's mix still clocks in at over two hours and contains 39 different tracks!

When it's all said and done, though, I'm very happy with how this came out. It's one of the more technical mixes I've done, with a much broader range in tempo than I usually work with (roughly 124-140 BPM). You can probably note the increases and decreases in tempo at a few different spots, but I tried to smooth them out as much as possible. That's one area that I think is actually a lot easier to do when live mixing, but you can't really correct anything if you fuck up in a live environment, and I'm not confident enough in my abilities to have that on record forever.

This is like the 18th Pride mix I've posted, so I'm not sure I can really say anything inspiring here that I haven't already tried to do 17 times before. The title for this mix comes from the 2nd to last song. Back when I was mixing a lot, I used to name my mixes by taking a few song titles that were in the mix and mashing them together to come up with something somewhat catchy. This time it's just a single word from a single song title, but it felt appropriate for the times. Things in the world - and particularly the States - are pretty rough right now, but as the song goes, we were made to rise like this. Pride is about many things, but I think visibility and solidarity are now more important than ever. You might as well do some dancing while you're making a statement, though.

Better late than never! (Pride 2025)

 

I'd thought last year's Pride mix was lost forever. Shortly after finishing the mix, my laptop died for good, and I kind of just figured that was it. I certainly didn't have the energy to try to recreate it, so it never got posted and instead lived on with the handful of people who had a copy. Flashforward nearly a year and throw in a little technical magic that frankly I'd assumed was well beyond my capabilities and surprise! I was able to completely recover the complete source file.

So it's Pride month again, one week out from TC Pride, and there's really no better time to finally post this thing (okay, 2nd best time...the first would've been a year ago, but I digress).

This is pretty standard stuff for my Pride mixes as of late. It's also the longest Pride mix I've ever created (so far...hint😉). It's of course a little dated - the pop songs aren't new anymore, and we've all heard enough Pink Pony Club for one lifetime - but much like me, I'd like to believe it's more timeless than passé. Good music should never go out of style.
