A gay old time

A lot of my friends have a thing for costume/theme parties.  Some of them even have entire closets devoted to storing old costumes.  It's generally not really my thing, but when some jokingly mentioned coming up with theme parties for an annual northern Minnesota cabin trip last summer (dubbed "Lake Edward Pride"), I suggested a gay pop icon party - not because I was thrilled to have to scrape together a costume, but because if there's one thing I can do, it's put together a pretty killer playlist.  The idea arose from a joke that's gone on for years now about Madonna (who?), a surprisingly polarizing figure among the gays.  Okay, not really, but that's kind of the joke.  Because when you have one or two friends with a borderline-unhealthy obsession, you give them shit for it.  It's much-deserved payback for largely controlling the campfire music for years and years now, at the very least.  So from Madonna sprung conversations about other gay pop icons, which culminated in an idea for a party with both costumes and music from those very icons.

I'm well aware that not all gay pop icons are represented here.  As I was reminded of several times, there are many, many omissions, particularly those who were big before the early 2000's.  Rest assured, it was a conscious decision to focus on just eight artists who retain pretty massive popularity today.  After all, this mix is already an hour and forty-five minutes long, and we had Rumchatta shots and uncomfortable games to get to.  And there's always next year for a sequel...

Also, my bad on the delay in posting this a whopping seven months after this party occurred.  I have no excuse for why a few minor edits took me so long.  But hey, at least it's not a year between mixes usual! :)

Summer Pool Party (Redux)

Nearly three years ago, I posted a pretty kick-ass pool party mix that I basically threw together in an hour.  That mix has since become a favorite to play whenever we're at the beach, at the pool, or hanging out with people who enjoy the more mainstream/pop side of EDM.  Although I think that mix holds up well, three years have passed, so many fitting new songs have emerged, and (let's face it) several of the tracks in the original pool mix were just too damn long.  So this year, rather than trying to one-up that mix, I've done one better - a completely modified, remastered, and re-mixed version of the original Summer Pool Party mix.  I've cut just one song from the original, but added 19 new ones, cut down the older tracks, and managed to fit it all in less than two hours!  If you like pop remixes or mainstream EDM, you will love this.

Summer is quickly fading; by my count, you've got about two weeks left to enjoy.  So crank this up when you hit up the beach, pool, or lake this weekeend and enjoy the last few moments of Summer, 2014.  This may seem a bit late to release this, but my hope is this will be as popular and as long-lasting as the original Summer Pool Party.  Download away!

Viva Mexico! (Part 2)

Nights in Playa del Carmen are magical.  When the last of the sun's rays recede from the Mexican soil, "La Quinta" - Playa's world famous entertainment, dining, and retail strip - comes alive with a whole new energy.  Artists, musicians, and street performers line the street as visitors and residents alike trade in their beachwear and flip flops for more comfortable apparel.  Everyone congregates on 5th Avenue - truly the heart of Playa - to eat, shop, and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of this enchanting street.

With this mix, I've tried to capture the energy of a night on 5th Avenue - not the thumping dance music of the many nightclubs lining 12th St, but the cool, laid-back vibe that is at once both trendy/chic and casual.  Expect  mostly chill, jazzy house music with Caribbean and Latin influences here, perfect for sipping cocktails under a palapa in some open-air oasis, a brief escape from the humid ocean breeze and the bustle of 5th Ave.  There are also a lot of fun hous-y reworks of some well-known tunes here, including everything from 1960's Ray Charles and 1970's Dolly Parton to early 90's Cece Peniston and late 90's Notorious B.I.G.  Unexpected sure, but I think you'll be surprised at how it all blends together.

Pour yourself a mojito, margarita, or martini, put up your feet, and get ready to experience a perfect soundtrack for those warm, relaxing vacation evenings when cares are forgotten and memories are made.  Viva Mexico!

Viva Mexico! (Part 1)

I am fortunate enough to be spending two glorious weeks in Mexico this year on a vacation that could not have come at a more opportune time given the even-nastier-than-usual winter we've had thus far.  I've put together mixes in the past that have been inspired by our trips to Playa, but I've never really tried to capture the essence and general feel of Mexico before...until now.  Today I'm presenting the first of two full-length mixes designed to channel the feel of an entire Mexican vacation straight through your speakers and into your ears.

As the sun rises each day in Playa del Carmen, people begin flocking to various resorts and beach clubs lining the turquoise blue coast of the Mexican riviera.  Perhaps most famous of all of these beach clubs is Playa Mamitas, where beautiful people gather to sunbathe, toes thrust in the powdery white sand, as waves gently crash ashore, palm fronds swaying in the Caribbean breeze overhead.  By mid-afternoon, fueled by an increasingly hot sun or perhaps one too many cervezas (and most likely both), an entirely different feeling begins to overtake the beach.  It is now less about relaxation, and as the music kicks in and the volume grows, an almost tangible energy begins to radiate through the crowd.  It is that exact feeling I have tried to capture in this mix.

A steadily driving baseline punctuated by moments of jazz, reggae, house, and latin drums blend together to effectively mimic the aural sensation of Mamitas.  This is about as beach-y as it gets.  So be sure to bring this one along on your vacation this year or give it a listen and pretend that you're actually there.  Because you're about to be transported a thousand miles south of the border, where all of your cares evaporate, and every day is the most amazing day of your life.  Viva Mexico!

Something old, something new...

Well, I suppose it wouldn't be February March without another Flashbacks mix. This is the seventh Flashbacks mix I've put together, and it's evident that dance music styles are changing. Whereas the first several Flashbacks sets consisted mainly of electro house reworks, this one is almost entirely made up of progressive anthems (and a little bit of house, too). Indeed, many of the original tunes I've used here have been used in previous mixes when electro house was big and producers were cranking out 80's and 90's reworks with electro basslines. Perhaps it's getting repetitive now to keep reinterpreting same 80's and 90's songs over and over again, but I still appreciate the transformation of old pop songs into dancefloor-friendly anthems. And everyone seems to appreciate the familiarity when a DJ throws a rework or two into the middle of his or her set.

Oh, Mexico...

I am currently putting the finishing touches on two different mixes, but I'm off to Mexico tomorrow, and there won't be time to finish. To help tide everyone over, I've decided to post a little bonus mix I made a few months ago, after our last trip to Playa del Carmen. Rich asked me to put together a set containing many of the songs we heard during our trip. That idea gradually transformed into this - a mix mostly made up of popular, mainstream dance tracks, with a bit of Mexican and Spanish-language flair.

This mix was almost titled "Memories of Mandala." Mandala is far and away our favorite club in Playa, and so this mix ended up being pretty heavily influenced by the music we heard there. The club is open to the street with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, and we have some truly amazing memories of dancing to Levels and Take Over Control in the steamy night air while rain poured down outside.

There's no tracks for this one, since it was literally thrown together in the course of an evening or two. If you're not big into the mainstream/pop stuff, this mix probably isn't for you. But I hope it's at least a little something to entertain until the next two are ready.

BTW, the last track is very obviously not characteristic for me. Rich asked that I include it, and I reluctantly obliged. I do not necessarily agree with its inclusion. :)

Time for a flashback or two...

If it's March, then it must mean it's time for me to post my annual flashbacks mix, a collection of re-makes and re-works guaranteed to take you back in time. As usual, this is mix comes a month late (hence dropping of "February" from the title). Hey, at least I'm consistent.

I actually really enjoy this mix, and I think it's probably one of the better remake/rework mix I've done. It's mostly house and electro, with a few progressive elements. It's not quite as cheesy as in previous years, which is okay with me. the interesting thing is that not everything on here is new. I've had some of these tracks for years, but just haven't found the right time to use them until now. I guess that makes them flashback within a flashback...spooky! Now I feel like I'm trapped in an episode of Lost.

Top 30 of 2011

I'm a bit late in posting this, mostly because I was out of town over New Year's...but also because I spent a bit extra time polishing it, too. This is always my most popular mix of the year, and I wanted to make sure it was as perfect as possible. Summer Ender

I put this mix together in a couple of hours before a day on the boat with some friends. It was a quick production, so there are no tracks, no tracklist, and hardly any post-mix edits. I can tell you, though, that it includes tracks from David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Klaas, Afrojack, Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO, Usher, Alexandra Stan, and more. I hope you enjoy the little bonus mix! We'll return to regular programming with a more typical mix next week. :)

Gayer Than Most...

Pride month is here, which means lots of celebrating, lots of and definitely lots of dancing. This is the third Pride mix I've put together in the past few years, and it's interesting to me that they've all got a dinstinctly different feel to them. The first Pride mix (2009) was just a lot of fun, with a lot of cheesy throwbacks and big gay anthems. Last year was definitely a bit more progressive, with lots of big piano tunes and a touch of electro. This year is fairly heavy on the pop side of things. I'll be honest and admit I had a hard time finding a group of songs that really aligned with the Pride theme, and ended up reverting to some of the larger pop hits from earlier this year (Firework, Till the World Ends, etc). In the end, though, I think that resulted in a solidly danceable mix with a good combination of new tracks and more recognizable tunes that people will want to dance to.

A big part of Pride is bridging our differences and bringing people together. What better way to do that than through music everyone can appreciate?

Double Feature - Part II

Whereas the mix I posted yesterday sits comfortably in the dancepop side of things, this one is much closer to a peakhour mix. It's high energy through and through, with lots of electro, a touch of progressive, and a few strains of electropop scattered throughout. I'm quite pleased with the entire thing, though I do have to admit that the last four songs are easily my favorites - easily some of the finest electro house music I've heard in awhile. Perhaps this will be a good year music-wise after all.

Since I haven't posted a new music mix in quite some time, I figured it's time for not one, but TWO brand new mixes. The first is pretty straightforward - dance floor friendly, mainstream pop music. The last time I posted a really pop-centric mix was November, so this is definitely overdue. Flashbacks V

My annual Flashbacks mix is a few days late, but I suppose that's par for the course, and by now, it's probably expected. Oh well.

Rather than blabber on about the music in this set, here are some fun facts about this mix:
* This marks the third time I'vs used a remix/rework of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The only other song in this mix I've used before is Wolfmother's Woman, which is mashed with Journey's "Any Way You Want It" here
* Oldest original sing in this mix: Arethra Franklin's "Respect" (1967)
* Most recent original song: Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" (2005)
* Though it's the longest track in this set, "I Want Your Sex" is edited considerably. I believe the original is over 11 minutes long!

The FOAM lives on...

It has now been more than a year since I attended my last FOAM party. In fact, it was the first FOAM-free summer in six years. Despite the initial appeal of it all, the novelty gradually wore off. It is our home-grown FOAM parties I miss most - not only because we worked our asses off to finally make it happen, but because I always enjoyed selecting and mixing the music for those crazy, crazy parties.

There was always something special about a FOAM mix. There was the inevitable combination of the most popular mainstream dance tracks and some major electro bangers, of course, but there was also a good number of fun tracks and 80's/90's reworks that got people dancing and singing along. Some of my favorite FOAM memories involve everyone singing to the electro version of "Summer of '69", and jumping/stomping to Micky Slim's remix of "Jump Around."

FOAM may be dead for now, but the music lives on. When I set out to create my newest mix, I decided to throw together a brand

new 4-hour mix as if I was mixing for another FOAM party. The result is a nice dose of pop, lots of electro, a few really fun throwbacks, & lots and lots of crazy. I'm providing several different download versions - including the entire mix in one file - just in case someone wants to throw a party (or pretend you're at one...). Regardless of what you do with this mix, I hope you enjoy it, and I hope the FOAM still lives in you. :)

Power On (Pride 2010)

Continuing the tradition from last year, I am posting my Pride 2010 mix the Friday of Pride Weekend. All over the country this, in cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and (of course) Minneapolis, gay men and women will be out in full force this weekend to celebrate what we have accomplished thus far, and to continue the fight for equality.

Music has always been a big part of Pride, and in the gay community in general. From gay divas and drag shows to Broadway and the presence of dance music at nearly any major gay event, the community sure loves its music. It has moved us, it has inspired us, and it has often defined our collective community. This mix exists in the spirit of all that is Pride.

Given the above, this set is obviously a bit different than my usual. There is a lot of Progressive House here, so if you're a proghead, you should enjoy that. But there's also a lot of gay house, a bit of top 40, and even a touch of electro. I tried to pick songs that fall most in line with traditional gay tunes. That largely resulted as a lot of big piano anthems, but I truly believe there's something for everyone here.

Get out and enjoy yourself this weekend. But while you're celebrating, don't forget to take a moment to remember those who fought before you, and all that still needs to be done. We've come far, but we have far to go. Happy Pride!!

Kiss My Revolver

Summer is well underway, and though (IMO) the music has been a bit disappointing so far, there are a few gems out there. This is a pretty decent blend of top 40, hip-house, progressive, and electro. It's actually a bit more on the progressive side than some of my more recent mixes. I feel I may be branching out a bit. :)

Instead of continuing on with the mundane "June 2010 Mix" stuff, I've decided to give my mixes a unique name from now on. Each name will be created using only words found in song titles contained in that mix. Thus, "Kiss My Revolver." The runner up would have been "One Crazy Drug" (although I do enjoy "Beat My Rocket" as well ;) ).

A note on Track 4: I, like most people over the age of 14, believe "Ke$ha" (her spelling, not mine) is almost completely lacking in talent, and pretty much epitomizes all that is wrong with pop music today. That said, I couldn't help but include Dave Aude's remix of "Your Love is My Drug." Somehow, he managed to take an over synthesized piece of garbage and turn it into something really quite beautiful. Props to him!

Double Whammy

When I began pulling tracks for my annual Flashbacks mix last month, I ran into what has become a frequent dilemma - too many tracks, and not enough time. So I decided, "What the hell? I'll just do TWO Flashbacks mixes." And here we are.

Harder, more electronic, and arguably dancier (if not clubbier) than the last, this mix is about 50% 80's reworks, with the rest pretty evenly split between the 70's, 90's, and early 2000's. Yes, the 80's always seems to prevail when it comes to reworks. But whether you love 'em or not, you're bound to be familiar with most of the tracks on here, and I hope you enjoy what other remixers and producers have done to them. After all, how else can you listen to Duran Duran or Journey and not feel at least a little old?

Flashback!

I am well aware that we are now a week and a half into March, but seeing as how posting this late is sort of a tradition, I think I can let it slide.

The third annual February Flashbacks installment is full of old(er) music remixed, reworked, and remade into something new. From Kansas to Milli Vanilli, and from Marvin Gaye to Metallica, this mix is a total collision of four decades of American pop culture. Admittedly, most of the stuff here is reworked from 80's and 90's hits, but there's definitely a hint of the 60's and 70's, as well as a track or two from the early 2000's. A ton of work went into perfecting this one - in my opinion it's the best of the Flashback mixes - so I hope you enjoy. Leave a comment and let me know!
