Power On (Pride 2010)

Continuing the tradition from last year, I am posting my Pride 2010 mix the Friday of Pride Weekend. All over the country this, in cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and (of course) Minneapolis, gay men and women will be out in full force this weekend to celebrate what we have accomplished thus far, and to continue the fight for equality.

Music has always been a big part of Pride, and in the gay community in general. From gay divas and drag shows to Broadway and the presence of dance music at nearly any major gay event, the community sure loves its music. It has moved us, it has inspired us, and it has often defined our collective community. This mix exists in the spirit of all that is Pride.

Given the above, this set is obviously a bit different than my usual. There is a lot of Progressive House here, so if you're a proghead, you should enjoy that. But there's also a lot of gay house, a bit of top 40, and even a touch of electro. I tried to pick songs that fall most in line with traditional gay tunes. That largely resulted as a lot of big piano anthems, but I truly believe there's something for everyone here.

Get out and enjoy yourself this weekend. But while you're celebrating, don't forget to take a moment to remember those who fought before you, and all that still needs to be done. We've come far, but we have far to go. Happy Pride!!

Kiss My Revolver

Summer is well underway, and though (IMO) the music has been a bit disappointing so far, there are a few gems out there. This is a pretty decent blend of top 40, hip-house, progressive, and electro. It's actually a bit more on the progressive side than some of my more recent mixes. I feel I may be branching out a bit. :)

Instead of continuing on with the mundane "June 2010 Mix" stuff, I've decided to give my mixes a unique name from now on. Each name will be created using only words found in song titles contained in that mix. Thus, "Kiss My Revolver." The runner up would have been "One Crazy Drug" (although I do enjoy "Beat My Rocket" as well ;) ).

A note on Track 4: I, like most people over the age of 14, believe "Ke$ha" (her spelling, not mine) is almost completely lacking in talent, and pretty much epitomizes all that is wrong with pop music today. That said, I couldn't help but include Dave Aude's remix of "Your Love is My Drug." Somehow, he managed to take an over synthesized piece of garbage and turn it into something really quite beautiful. Props to him!

It's June already??!

It's been awhile, hasn't it? I guess somehow between the great spring weather, a trip to Vegas, and a new computer (with new mixing software), I feel a bit behind. I hope I'm forgiven. :)

This is a pretty standard 80-minute mix of (relatively) new music. It starts off with some pop and indie house, and quickly moves on to the more elecro side of things. There are definitely some summer bangers here. DJ Zam's take on DJ Antoine is a big winner, and I like Ryan Riback's pretty sick take on the Magik Johnson track. DJ'S From Mars continue to really impress me with their electro mashes. You'll find three of their remixes here (a fourth was cut at the last minute, but will definitely show up next time).
