Top 30 of 2013

 At long last, 2013 has come to its close, which means it's finally time for my annual end-of-year mix - nearly three hours of my favorite songs of the year mixed down into just 80 minutes.  Make sure to crank this loud tonight when the clock hits midnight, and you're sure to enjoy a memorable end of 2013.  Cheers to 2014!

End of the Universe

As promised, here is nearly 94 minutes of commercial & progres-sive house euphoria. This should definitely stand in contrast to last month's mix, but should be a pretty nice complement to that as well.  Here you'll find some of the biggest house tunes of the year, including one track each from the top four DJ's in this year's DJ Mag Top 100.  In fact, half of the songs on this mix come from producers in the top 20, so if you don't enjoy, you're probably in the wrong place. :)

I'm already hard at work on my annual top 30 mix, so watch for that in a couple of weeks.  Then expect a break while I work on something new and entirely different from anything else I've posted in the past several years.  More to come.

A Sound Addiction

The last time I put together a pop mix was last December.  Truth be told, as pop music creeps further and further into EDM territory, remixes/reworks become much less interesting, less dissimilar to the original, and I'm less inclined to use them in my mixes.  After all, who wants to hear a slightly different version of a song that has been played on the radio over and over and over again?  Thus, this mix is a bit different in that I tried to include a number of songs that were inherently "pop" in nature, but haven't been overplayed to the extreme.  Not all of these tracks are "new", but this does pretty well represent my favorite pop remixes of the past six months or so.

I'll have one more mix before the end of the year, so make sure to watch for that.  As of right now it's entirely pop free...just lots of proggy, electro goodness to enjoy.  It'll be a nice change after this one.

Goodbye Summertime

I can't believe it's been three months since my last mix.  I sure hope this one was worth the wait!  Where the

hell did summer go again?

I seriously considered not including the Avicii and Lana del Rey tracks because EDM seems to have pretty much taken over commercial Top 40 radio now, and both of those songs are ridiculously overplayed.  However, they're both two of my favorite dance songs of the year, and it didn't seem right to leave them out.  Hopefully you're not entirely sick of them yet.

Other than the two aforementioned tracks, there's not a lot of pop remixes here.  It's actually been quite awhile since I've put together a more pop-centric dance mix, so that may be in the works next.  I promise not to make you wait three months this time.

Thirteen and counting...

There's certainly a lot to celebrate in Minnesota this year.  The defeat of an anti-gay marriage amendment, followed closely by the passing of a gay marriage bill and the overturning of DOMA.  Things are going to be crazy in Minneapolis this weekend as nearly half a million people gather together to take part in the 42nd annual Twin Cities Pride.

Now more than ever, it's important to take a moment to recognize those who have fought to hard for equal rights - the men and women who often put everything on the line to stand on the right side of history.  From the 1969 Stonewall Riots and Harvey Milk to current organizations like the HRC and Lambeda Legal, so many have worked tirelessly to ensure that LGBT citizens of the United States are treated fairly, and afforded all of the protections and opportunities given to our heterosexual brothers & sisters.  The fight is far from over, but progress marches ever onward thanks to the many who have lived and died for the cause.

I'm proud that I can't be fired from my job for being gay, that I can hold another man's hand in public without fear of legal prosecution, and that now I can marry my boyfriend of six years if I so desire.  I'm proud to live in a state that recognizes me as a complete citizen undeserving of a second class status.  I'm prouder than ever of Minnesota, and this weekend is the time to make that known.  Thirteen states now allow gay marriage.  Yes, that's thirteen...and counting.

Summer Starter 2K13

Kick start your Memorial Day Weekend with a delightful 87-minute set from yours truly.  As usual, this one is long overdue, so I've lost the element of surprise a bit with some tracks that can hardly be considered "new" at this point.  (This is especially notable with the first two tracks, I'm sure).  However, I felt the remixes of these tracks were good enough to warrant inclusion here.

Electro House seems to be making a bit of a resurgence after nearly dying out (or at least almost reaching the point of intolerability) a few months back.  I'm happy to hear some new electro songs that are both fresh and unique, and you'll no doubt find this mix is a bit more balanced progressive/electro than some of my more recent postings.  Never fear, though - there's plenty here for all of the prog-heads out there.

Whatever your plans this weekend, I hope you get a chance to crank this at least once, whether it's at a barbeque, the pool, or on a long jog around the 'hood.  Obviously, I also hope that you get to listen to it outside.  Winter has finally released its persistent grasp, and things are finally heating up.  Thank God.

Something old, something new...

Well, I suppose it wouldn't be February March without another Flashbacks mix. This is the seventh Flashbacks mix I've put together, and it's evident that dance music styles are changing. Whereas the first several Flashbacks sets consisted mainly of electro house reworks, this one is almost entirely made up of progressive anthems (and a little bit of house, too). Indeed, many of the original tunes I've used here have been used in previous mixes when electro house was big and producers were cranking out 80's and 90's reworks with electro basslines. Perhaps it's getting repetitive now to keep reinterpreting same 80's and 90's songs over and over again, but I still appreciate the transformation of old pop songs into dancefloor-friendly anthems. And everyone seems to appreciate the familiarity when a DJ throws a rework or two into the middle of his or her set.

Voice of Reason

It's been two months since I've posted some new music, and despite a pretty kick-ass Top 30 last month, this is probably a bit overdue.  I really like this one - fairly equal parts pop and commercial progressive/electro house blend seamlessly into 97+ minutes of joyful noise.  Notable standouts are Thomas Gold's remix of the new One Republic track, Avicii & Nicky Romero's club-friendly "I Could Be the One", Vicetone's nice remix of FLG's "Sparks", and Dzeko & Torres' smashing take on Kryder & Bo Bruce's "Damaged" remake.  I broke my own rule of not using a remix of a track I've previously used (twice actually!), but both of them were good enough to warrant inclusion here.

I've got nothing else to say, so I'll let you download and judge it yourself.  But I do hope you enjoy.
