There's certainly a lot to celebrate in Minnesota this year. The defeat of an anti-gay marriage amendment, followed closely by the passing of a gay marriage bill and the overturning of DOMA. Things are going to be crazy in Minneapolis this weekend as nearly half a million people gather together to take part in the 42nd annual Twin Cities Pride.
Now more than ever, it's important to take a moment to recognize those who have fought to hard for equal rights - the men and women who often put everything on the line to stand on the right side of history. From the 1969 Stonewall Riots and Harvey Milk to current organizations like the HRC and Lambeda Legal, so many have worked tirelessly to ensure that LGBT citizens of the United States are treated fairly, and afforded all of the protections and opportunities given to our heterosexual brothers & sisters. The fight is far from over, but progress marches ever onward thanks to the many who have lived and died for the cause.
I'm proud that I can't be fired from my job for being gay, that I can hold another man's hand in public without fear of legal prosecution, and that now I can marry my boyfriend of six years if I so desire. I'm proud to live in a state that recognizes me as a complete citizen undeserving of a second class status. I'm prouder than ever of Minnesota, and this weekend is the time to make that known. Thirteen states now allow gay marriage. Yes, that's thirteen...and counting.
